Reykjavík’s community centers have reinstated hot lunch services, providing up to 1,000 meals daily to senior housing, community centers, and assisted living apartments operated by the city’s Department of Welfare. This initiative follows a temporary suspension due to necessary renovations at the Vitatorg Day Training kitchen.
The city has partnered with the company Krydd og Kavíar to produce these meals under a two-month contract, effective from March 2. This arrangement ensures that residents can once again enjoy hot lunches at their local community centers while the city works on establishing a long-term solution.
The decision to expedite kitchen renovations came after the detection of listeria, prompting an immediate closure to prioritize health and safety. During this period, the city focused on maintaining meal deliveries to residents of assisted living apartments and day care participants, ensuring continued support for those in need.
Residents have expressed appreciation for the swift restoration of services, highlighting the importance of community centers in providing not only meals but also social interaction and support. The city’s commitment to addressing the needs of its residents underscores the value placed on community well-being and the proactive measures taken to maintain essential services.
